Cat grooming is not a matter that many cat owners give much thought to but as we all know, cats spend a whole lot of their time licking their paws and rubbing them across their face or getting into unlikely places so as to lick their backs, chests and other parts that we will not mention here. Together, this activity is called grooming. Short haired breeds of cat can usually groom themselves successfully without human intervention, but long haired cats like Persians will definitely need help. The grooming process is essential since it not only keeps the cat clean but removes loose hair. Without combing, lots of this hair would wind up on your cat’s stomach. Since hair is not easily digestible, it often creates hairballs and cats frequently cough up hairballs, they can clog up their insides, resulting in all sorts of health issues.

Obviously a good combing will eradicate a good deal of the dirt etc. which a cat picks up daily and is also a wonderful chance to consider fleas and ticks. If you think that your cat will hate being brushed, you could be astounded at how much he really relishes the experience. Naturally, it is much easier to get your cat used to grooming gear when he’s still a young kitty. Very lightly comb or brush over your cat’s coat, after the lie of the fur in the neck to the tail. Never brush against the lie of the fur as most cats’ dislike this intensely. If he starts to get irritable, stop brushing him and play with him for a few minutes until he’s relaxed. Do not groom his face or paws using the comb or brush, as most cats do not enjoy this. For cats who do not like to be brushed, you can try another grooming tool, the grooming glove.

While you are grooming your cat, take a look at his ears and eyes also. His eyes bright, with no discharge and his ears should be clean. Very dirty ears may indicate that your cat has ear mites. This illness can cause irreparable harm to your cat’s ears so make certain to take him into the vet to be checked over in the event you believe he may have mites. Grooming long haired cats can be very hard as their coats can get matted, if left unattended for a long time. If your cat will submit to you cutting off the matted components, then that would be preferable. If he will not stay still long enough for this, you might have to take the cat to a Mobile cat grooming or even to the vet, even if he needs sedation. However, this is quite extreme. If you keep your eye on your cat and try to keep his fur free of tangles, then no more extreme treatment ought to be needed. Cat grooming may seem like it may be left up to the cat, but human owners have a duty also, to be certain their cats’ coats are kept in good shape.
